Form I-9 and E-Verify Requirements

Form I-9: Section 1

Newly hired employees must complete Section 1 of Form I-9 in its entirety.  Providing a Social Security Number (SSN) on Form I-9 is usually voluntary, but newly hired employees of employers participating in E-Verify are required to provide an SSN on Form I-9.  Therefore, all newly hired employees, including seasonal, temporary, and rehires, MUST have an SSN.

If an employee does NOT have an SSN, he or she must obtain one from the Social Security Administration (SSA).  This delays the 3-day requirement to create a case in E-Verify.  Employers must note the reason for this delay on the employee’s Form I-9 and during the verification process.  You must create a case in E-Verify as soon as the employee receives an assigned SSN from SSA.
