Types of Life Events

Life Events permit managers to change an employee's benefits coverage in the middle of the plan year, when changes would normally be restricted.

Birth or Adoption

If you or your Spouse has given birth to a child or completed the legal adoption of a child within the last 31 days, Child and/or Spouse may be added to employee's covered plans, or employee may elect previously declined coverage for employee and eligible dependents.

Marriage

If you have married and obtained a legal marriage certificate within the last 31 days, Spouse and Spouse's Children may be added to employee's covered plans, or employee may elect previously declined coverage, or employee and dependents may drop coverage to enroll in Spouse's benefits.

Registered Domestic Partnership

If you have formed a legal Domestic Partnership within the last 31 days, Partner and Partner's Children may be added to employee's covered plans, or employee may elect previously declined coverage, or employee and dependents may drop coverage to enroll in Partner's benefits. (This Life Event type is only available if offered by current benefit carrier)

Divorce / Annulment / Legal Separation

If you have legally separated from your Spouse, ex-Spouse will be removed from coverage. Your Children may be added to your coverage or removed from your coverage to enroll in ex-Spouse's benefits. If you had previously declined coverage, you may elect coverage.

Domestic Partnership Dissolution

If you have legally dissolved your Domestic Partnership, ex-Partner and ex-Partner's Children will be removed from coverage.  Your Children may be added to your coverage.  If you had previously declined coverage, you may elect coverage.  (This Life Event type is only available if offered by current benefit carrier)

Spouse obtains other Employment / Coverage

If Spouse becomes newly eligible for other benefits coverage, Employee, Spouse, and/or Dependents may decline coverage to enroll in Spouse's benefits.

Significant Change in other Coverage

If terms of outside benefits coverage are significantly altered for covered persons in the other plan, you and/or all eligible dependents currently enrolled in the other plan may elect coverage under your employer's plan.

Employee or Dependents Lose other Coverage

If you and/or your eligible dependents have outside benefits coverage and lose eligibility due to loss of spouse's employment or other involuntary means, all eligible persons currently enrolled in the other plan may elect coverage under your employer's plan.

Dependent becomes Eligible

If Dependent becomes newly eligible for coverage by enrolling as a full-time student or experiencing a qualifying disability, dependent may be added to employee's coverage.

Dependent no longer Eligible

If Dependent loses eligibility due to age, marriage, death, or change in student status, dependent will be removed from employee's coverage.

Death of Spouse

If your Spouse dies, he/she will be removed from your coverage. If you or your eligible dependents were previously covered under your Spouse's coverage, you may elect coverage under your employer's plan.

Death of Domestic Partner

If your Partner dies, he/she will be removed from employee's coverage.  If you or your eligible dependents were previously covered under your Partner's benefits coverage, you may elect coverage under your employer's plan.  (This Life Event type is only available if offered by current benefit carrier)

Gain / Lose Medicare / Medicaid Entitlement
